Rishabh Pant to Lead Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025

LSG Finds Their New Captain After KL Rahul’s Departure
The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are soon going to mark a new inning when Rishabh Pant will be leading them in IPL 2025. The explosive wicket-keeper batsman was the costliest acquisition at the Indian Premier League mega auction 2024 and the LSG roped him into their fold by spending INR 27 crores that approximates to US $3.21 million. It is a massive signing for Pant and the franchise, which was on the look for a strong leader after it decided not to retain KL Rahul.
LSG Captaincy Shift
KL Rahul has led the team, LSG from day one with IPL 2022. Well under his guidance during the last couple of years or first seasons it reached playoff contention two back seasons. And despite this very good performance on court could not win through into finals. And the franchise got itself into some revaluation of its route, which took the franchise down another road.
In preparation for the auction, the team retained five core players of the existing team, including Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi, Mayank Yadav, Ayush Badoni, and Mohsin Khan. And more importantly, LSG needed a new captain for their team’s forward journey.

Pant’s Journey to LSG
Rishabh Pant has played from Delhi Capitals since 2016. In 2021 he accepted the responsibility of being the captain for the team. He served as a captain until 2022. He didn’t feature in the 2023 season. It was due to the fact that he had met with a severe car accident he was a victim of.
Year | Team | Role | Notes |
2016 | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Player | Joined DC in the IPL. |
2021 | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Captain | Took over as captain. |
2022 | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Captain | Continued as captain. |
2023 | N/A | Did not play | Missed the season due to a severe car accident. |
He was suffering from multiple injuries. The franchise was very keen on retaining him, but about the leadership role, he needed clarity. He decided to go into the auction pool since the team did not commit to his bid.
LSG smelt a business opportunity and threw in a hefty bid for him. Initially, they managed to outbid Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by quoting an INR 20.75 crore amount. They went all out and quoted 27 crore to beat the right-to-match option that DC had placed on Pant.
A Fresh challenge for Pant
Being named LSG captain will mean Pant leads an IPL franchise for the second time in his career. This is going to be a new challenge for him as he shall have to prove his leadership skills in a different environment.
Pant won’t be lonely in this adventure. LSG has developed a robust squad with experienced international players like David Miller, Mitchell Marsh, and Aiden Markram. The team also has promising Indian pacers Akash Deep and Avesh Khan. Initially, there were talks of Pooran, Marsh, Markram, or Miller taking over the captaincy, but the franchise finally trusted Pant.
Pant’s Support System at LSG
The major gain for Pant in LSG is the depth of experience related with the coaching staff of the team. Former Australian cricketer Justin Langer is given the role of the head coach for the team with a tremendous insight into leadership and its connected procedures. Pant was already in conversation with Langer before this collaboration, mainly when he had gone to Australia and played Border-Gavaskar Trophy there; hence it turned out to be a less daunting working relation.
LSG has also appointed former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan as the team’s mentor. With a sharp cricketing mind, Zaheer will definitely be able to guide the team and, in the process, help Pant himself in leading the team.

Tough Road Ahead
Taking over any new team will never be a cakewalk, when the expectations will be so sky-high. As of now Pant has already emerged as an aggressive batsman as well as fearless cricketer, but all this will also test his flexibility and strategic outlook in leading up a different franchise.
LSG’s performance in the last season was below expectations, so Pant’s challenge will be to turn things around. He will need to bring stability and a fresh energy to the team, ensuring that they not only reach the playoffs but also push for the trophy.

Looking Ahead to IPL 2025
Since the season of IPL 2025 starts in March, Pant and his team have lesser time to prepare. The team will be bonding together as a unit while discussing strategy with the players to come in fit and healthy about their physique.
Fans of LSG will feel excited about this new era under Pant. Aggressive in style of play and with the experience of high-pressure situations, he was a good choice for captaincy. If he could transfer that fearless batting into leadership, LSG would actually become one of the most dangerous teams within IPL 2025.
All eyes would now be on Pant as he embarks on this new journey. Would Pant arise to the occasion and take LSG to their very first IPL title? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure that IPL 2025 just got a whole lot more interesting.
