CSK were runners-up in the initial two seasons of the IPL, losing by a narrow margin to Rajasthan Royals and Deccan Chargers. In 2010 they lifted the jinx and became the champions and did the same again in 2011 with a winning performance. They were runner-up in 2012 and 2013 and third in 2014. But they came close in 2018 to claiming the IPL trophy.

CSK failed to play as expected this year in 2020 when they were not even able to make it to the playoffs for the first time in history. But came back with a bang in 2021 by claiming the championship for the third time. Experienced another low period in 2022 before winning the championship a record fifth time in 2023. Dhoni stepped down as captain in 2024 and was replaced by Gaikwad. But were not even good enough to qualify for the playoffs.

IPL 2023

Champions: Chennai Super Kings

Runners Up: Gujarat Titans

Following some loss of momentum in the 2022 campaign, CSK regained form strongly in IPL 2023, for which they were second on the points table. They started off with a loss to Titans but took a turnaround with wins over Lucknow Super Giant and Mumbai Indians. They played evenly throughout the season, and made it an easy task to qualify for the playoffs. They overpowered Titans in the first qualifier by 15 runs to secure a spot in yet another final.

Then in the final, they showed everyone why CSK is the powerhouse team of the tournament. It was a game that had to be taken up to the reserve day. 214 for 4 had been scored by Titans. CSK were required to chase 172 off 15 overs. They didn’t have any hope and required 10 off 2 balls. It was when Ravindra Jadeja came in for a smash of a six and a four to give CSK its fifth record crown.

IPL 2021

Champions: Chennai Super Kings

Runners Up: Kolkata Knight Riders

CSK had their worst season so far in 2020 when for the first time in history they even failed to qualify for the playoffs. It was an embarrassing time but MS Dhoni promised that they would come back and come back they did! Chennai was great in the group stages right from the start with players such as Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis and Josh Hazlewood playing for them regularly.

Even during the UAE leg of the league, CSK never ran out of words to play. They made it to the playoffs second on the table. In the first Qualifier, they simply brushed aside Delhi Capitals. In the final then du Plessis played and assisted CSK to achieve a very good score. KKR had no hope even and were short by 27 runs ultimately.

IPL 2018

Champions: Chennai Super Kings

Runners Up: Sunrisers Hyderabad

CSK was always a team that reached the playoffs, but the IPL title continued to elude them for a couple of seasons. Things worsened for them when they were banned for two seasons in 2016 as a result of the role played by the management in the IPL 2013 spot-fixing scandal. There were massive question marks on their comeback in IPL 2018, but they silenced all those who doubted them with a surprising victory.

Dad’s army CSK demonstrated that experience is all that counts ultimately. It was somehow fate that CSK lifted the IPL trophy in 2018. They discovered X-factors in each match. CSK played strong all season. Bravo starred in the first match. Watson shone in the final. They finished second with 18 points. CSK beat Sunrisers by two wickets in Qualifier 1.

As fate would have it, CSK encountered Hyderabad again in the finals and came back on top. This time, it was Shane Watson who winded the clock to deliver a masterclass.

Batting first, Hyderabad scored a stiff 178/6 in 20 overs, by any standard, a wonderful total, more so for the finals. Watson had other plans, though. He creamed the best 117* from 57 deliveries to enable CSK reach the target in 18.3 overs and score a victory to remember. Watson was named Player of the Match, and CSK’s comeback made each of their fans proud.

IPL 2011

Champions: Chennai Super Kings

Runners Up: Royal Challengers Bangalore

Impressive to win their first title, but the way CSK followed that up with a spectacular display in the following edition of IPL was even better. They began their season with a gripping two-run victory against Kolkata Knight Riders, and things only improved from there for them.

CSK finished IPL league stage in second place on the table with nine wins and five losses. They then beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in Qualifier 1 by 43 runs to reach the final. The two teams clashed again in the finals, and not surprisingly, CSK were victorious again.

While the qualifier was a closely fought encounter, the IPL final was an emphatically one-sided affair. Murali Vijay, not known for his restraint, upped his game, smacking 95 off just 52 balls to take CSK to a behemoth 205/5 from their 20 overs.

A score of such enormity was always difficult to pursue, and RCB did not even get anywhere near it. In the end, the Bangalore franchise managed only 147/8, and CSK won the IPL trophy second year in succession.

Player of the match was Murali Vijay for his brilliant 95, and Chris Gayle won the award for Player of the Tournament.
