West Indies opened their batting and had 245 runs on the board, most of which was contributed by the giant 103 off 102 balls by Philo Wallace. South Africa’s Jacques Kallis, though, was the match hero, whose all-round match-winning performance led to the game. Kallis took 5/30 with the bowling and contributed with the bat too as South Africa achieved the task of chasing the target with 18 overs still remaining, scoring 248/6.
2000 – New Zealand’s First ICC Major Title
2000 was also Kenya edition, and New Zealand won their first-ever title in an ICC major tournament. New Zealand, with Chris Cairns’s record 102* not out as their leader, trailed 265 behind in winning the final over India. New Zealand took home the trophy as India collapsed without a fight following Sourav Ganguly’s sublime 117 after having four wickets still to their name.
2002 – Shared Glory of India and Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s 2002 ICC Champions Trophy was an unusual tournament. The final India-Sri Lanka game of the competition was abandoned as a no-result when rain continued on the reserve day. The two sides were then both declared winners, the first and, to date, only time an ICC tournament has had double champions.
2004 – West Indies Shock England Hosts
West Indies won by two wickets on the final ball of their first Champions Trophy victory in 2004 at The Oval. West Indies were in deep trouble at 147/8 while pursuing 218, but Ian Bradshaw and Courtney Browne then joined forces to post an unbeaten 71 runs to lead their side home in a heart-stopping two-wicket win.
2006 – Australia’s Debut Victory
Australia, cricket world champions, finally acquired the Champions Trophy in 2006. Australia defeated West Indies in the final at Mumbai by eight wickets, with Shane Watson scoring 57* in rain-curtailed short run not required to be attained.
2009 – Australia’s Back-to-Back Titles Attained
In defense of the title, Australia ruled supreme in 2009 by annihilating New Zealand in the final against South Africa. In the chase of 201, Shane Watson once again set the tone with the bat and scored a victory-winning 105* to lead Australia to a six-wicket victory.
2013 – India’s Thrilling Victory Over England
MS Dhoni steered India to the victory at the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy in England. The final, cut to 20 overs per team owing to rain in Edgbaston, was not enough to counter India’s strength as it touched 130 runs. England performed its best in response, but all-round class by Ravindra Jadeja helped India get a spine-shivering five-wicket win and made Dhoni the first ever captain to win all three major ICC white-ball trophies.
2017 – Pakistan’s Historic Win Over India
Pakistan stunned the world in the 2017 Champions Trophy final against their age-old foes India at The Oval. Pakistan scored a record all-time highest of 338/4 while batting first owing to Fakhar Zaman’s dream 114. Under pressure, India disintegrated in the reply, Mohammad Amir’s devastating spell of 3/16 annihilating their top order. Pakistan bowled out India for a paltry 158 to claim their maiden Champions Trophy in a record-breaking 180-run victory.
